Installing Chair RailsHere are the steps on installing chair rails;

  1. Measure the entire wall of the room. List down all the measurement for future reference.
  2. Measure and put a mark on the chair rails to length and to the corresponding wall with a pencil. Take note of the angle at the edge of the chair rail. Chair rails must be cut at a 45 degree angle at the edge with the wall side of the chair rail with the long joint for inside corners. On outside corners like wall juts, the chair rail must be cut at a 45 degree angle on the short side of the wall side.
  3. Cut each chair rail according to length, and using a miter saw, cut the marked edges.
  4. Measure the height of your chairs used in the room and place a mark on the wall corresponding to the height of the chairs.
  5. Nail the chair rails on the marked area. Use finishing nails for every six to eight inches and putty the nailed portions and sand them for smooth finish. After the putty has dried, then you can add matching paint as the final touch for your chair rail installation project.

DECORATING WITH CHAIR RAILS

Decorating with chair rails is best for wainscoting projects. Wainscoting is wall paneling starting from the floor base and ending at the chair rail. Chair rails combined with wainscoting makes the room more interesting, and at the same time they protect the wall from scuffs and dents caused by the movement of chairs.

Steps in decorating with chair rails;

  1. Carefully remove the baseboard molding using a pry bar. Make sure to pry the baseboard without marring the wall and if possible, retain the same baseboard for return to the wall after completion.
  2. Mark the entire portion of the wall where the wainscoting paneling is to be installed. Use a circular saw to cut the panels measuring from the baseboard up to the chair rails section. Place the rough edges of the panels at the bottom so that the baseboard can hide them.
  3. Attach the chair rails above the wainscoting. Use a miter saw to cut at the angles and then join them together. For inside corners, make a 45 degree miter cuts at the joints creating right angles to fit them together. Secure each panel with nails to avoid movement.
  4. Return the pried baseboards to hide the rough edges of the wainscoting and floor seam. Nail them together and putty the nail holes for smooth finish.
